  2. Finding and Applying for Federal Jobs - Presented by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. This video is 30-minutes long and is presented by a federal employee.

The federal government employs nearly two million civilian workers. Within the next three years, federal agencies expect to hire more than 270,000 new workers to fill mission-critical positions at various places across the nation. However, the process for applying to a federal job can be confusing and frustrating. Learn from our experienced workshop leaders how to navigate the federal job application process and how to apply for federal jobs.

Topics include:

  • How to find federal job vacancies online.
  • Preparing to apply online.
  • How to read a vacancy announcement.
  • Understanding and writing the online federal resume.
  • Understanding core competencies and KSAs.
  • Understanding veterans’ preferences.

Because the federal job application process is entirely online, you will best apply what you learn from this workshop if are proficient with the internet and Microsoft Word.

NOTE: This workshop will be most valuable if you attend the Resume and Cover Letter workshop first.

What is a 1099 worker? 1099 workers are independent professionals under contract and are not regular employees. The term “1099 worker” comes from the US tax form 1099. A “Contractor” is a legal term for a person or firm that enters into a contract to perform a service or provide a product.

The following topics will be covered:

  • What is 1099-Contract Work?
  • How does the IRS define it and what are the tax implications?
  • What legal business entity should I be?
  • How do I prepare an Independent Contract Agreement?
  • How should I keep my records so they are organized and accurate?
  • What kind of insurance should I consider? 

NOTE: It is recommended that you take LCWC’s “How to Be Your Own Boss” before taking this class.

Over the past 22 years, Geoff has worked for small and large accounting firms that have represented a wide variety of clients. In 2000, he moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, and began practicing as a Certified Public Accountant independently in 2001. Geoff’s experience spans a wide range of traditional accounting (bookkeeping, tax, reporting, budgeting), as well as accounting systems, employee benefits, and business planning.

Tom Selken, Attorney at Law
Tom specializes in business formation, employer handbooks, employer agreements, bankruptcy, estate planning, real estate and civil litigation. He is a member of the Colorado Bar Association, Larimer County Bar Association and the Young Lawyers Division of Larimer County Bar Association.
