Career Road Trips are designed to connect youth and businesses together at the business location. Career Road Trips will take place once per week during the months of June and July. Youth will tour local businesses and have the opportunity to interact with professionals in various industries. Through these Career Road Trips, business leaders describe the types of candidates they plan to hire in the future while outlining their expectations. Youth leave with an understanding of:

  • Careers available within specific industries
  • Skills needed to be successful
  • Education required in high school and beyond
  • The day-to-day work duties in specific careers
  • Knowledge of local employers and their future hiring needs
  • Employer expectations of the next generation workforce

Where: All tours will depart from the Harmony Library
(4616 South Shields, Fort Collins, Colorado 80526) and will take place at businesses throughout Larimer County.

Time:  Arrive at Harmony Library at 8:15 AM – Tour groups will return to the Harmony Library by 12:00 PM (Noon)


What Industries are We Exploring This Year?

Healthcare

  • Columbine Health Systems
    Interested in working with and for seniors in our community? Locally owned and operated, CHS has been meeting the health & rehab needs of seniors in Larimer County for over 35 years! There are a total of 9 separate Assisted Living, Health & Rehab, and Independent Living facilities in Fort Collins and Loveland. CHS has it’s own training center where the public and become trained and certified in such entry level positions as Personal Care Providers and Nursing Assistants.  If you have ever had an interest in the operations of assisted living homes, different careers it offers, or the medical field in general, this is the tour for you!
     
  • Medical Center of the Rockies
    Medical Center of the Rockies (MCR) is a beautiful 5 year old facility that specializes in heart and trauma care. If today’s modern technology and the role it plays in the medical fields has ever interested you, this is the place to be! MCR was the first institute to bring robot medical technology to Colorado, and although the incisions made by these devices are very small (no longer than a few millimeters!) the robotic instruments greatly increase the surgeon’s precision, range of motion and ability to see the surgical field.  MCR offers entry level positions for young people which could open the door to a career in Health Care.

Clean Energy Technology & Engineering

  • CSU Engine & Conservation Lab
    Have an interest in the rising global demand for energy, the declining global production of petroleum, the worldwide impact on health pollution from fossil-fuel combustion has, or the forceful global climate change because of the buildup of greenhouse gasses? Colorado State University is one of the leading research sites solving these problems. If you care about the world you live in, and want to see what others (and potentially you someday!) are doing to make a difference, come check out what people in our community are doing to make a difference.
  • Woodward Governor
    Interested in Wind Turbines and renewable, sustainable energy? Maybe you’re interested in aircrafts, and how they seem to completely defy gravity. Woodward Governor is an engineering firm centered around fuel, combustion, fluid, actuation, and electronic control systems for aerospace and energy. This industry is driven by demand for fuel-efficient, low-emission, and high-performance products making careers in this field in high demand. Touring Woodward Governor would not only be a fun way to witness what really goes into the research and design of these innovative products, but a great way to experience what a career in Engineering could be like.
     
  •  In-Situ INC
    How clean is our water? In-Situ INC could tell us! They are a leading manufacturer of in-situ (on-site) water monitoring instruments and have been doing so for over 40 years! Their high-tech, ever-adapting products are sold to places varying from hospitals (water’s gotta be extra clean), water treatment plants, companies responsible for the clean up of hazardous waste sites, and many more. Their instruments are used to solve real-world problems such as monitoring ground, surface, and coastal waters, mining, flood warning, and storm water monitoring. If you’ve an interest in a real- world application of high-tech science, this is the tour you want to be on!
     
  • City of Loveland Water & Power
    Interested in one of Northern Colorado’s most emerging and highly paid career fields? Come and learn about a future in our utility industry!  Loveland Water and Power is a municipal, or city-owned, utility responsible for providing pristine water to drink, and reliable power when customers turn on the lights along with wastewater utility.  Utilities offer a wide variety of careers including: designing systems/engineering, building and maintaining systems, GIS/mapping, sustainability, outreach programs for the community, administrative duties, as well as working closely with many other departments within the City government. City-owned utilities offer career stability – people will always need water and electric!

Hospitality, Event Planning & Recreation

  • The Chilson Recreation Center  
    The Chilson Recreation Center of Loveland is not only a facility of personal fitness and health, but a place of great opportunities. With its two full sized gymnasiums, full sized pool, and fitness areas many different options are available for youth in our community in terms of employment, and career outlooks. From lifeguard positions, to personal training, to coaching sports, the Chilson Recreation Center is a great place to explore the many possibilities in the health and wellness fields!
  • Larimer County Fair Grounds & Budweiser Event Center
    The Ranch (also the Budweiser Events Center) is one of the premier entertainment venues of this region. With the many events this complex holds ranging from concerts, to weddings, to The Eagles professional hockey games, there are many careers available under this one facility.  With events planning, customer service, service management, and countless other careers, come check out what a future in this ever changing industry is all about!
     
  • The Lincoln Center
    Have you ever been interested or participated in the performing arts? What about stage management and/or visual arts? The Lincoln Center of Fort Collins offers the opportunity to advance your knowledge in these areas with a cultural experience and a technical setting. With the positions the Lincoln Center offers in stage management, event coordination and planning, recruiting, sales, and many more, the Lincoln Center is the place to visit if you’re considering a future in the organization and production of performing arts!
     
  • The Embassy Suites, Hilton Hotels
    Interested in an excited career in hospitality and tourism? Have you ever seen yourself as a “people person”? The Embassy Suites tour could be the one for you! With the many different career opportunities ranging from customer service representatives to General Management, the possibilities are endless! Entry level jobs for teens could be restaurant employment, cashier, front desk assistance, sales, and catering.

Criminal Justice & Human Services

  • Larimer County Court House Offices
    What really happens behind the scenes at our Justice Center? A tour through the courthouse offices can answer that very question. Although things can get somewhat complicated and confusing upon entering a court room, it is also a very interesting setting when witnessing the very procedures in the American Justice System dating back hundreds of years. If you have any interest in the law portion of the criminal justice system, this is the place to visit!
     
  • Fort Collins Police Services 
    If you have ever had an interest in the complicated routines and procedures involved in a career in Law Enforcement, this is the tour for you! Fort Collins PD is not just about being a Police Officer, there are many other careers housed in this incredible facility that you probably haven’t even considered! Come hear about life as a patrolling officer, detective, dispatch, crime scene investigators, and many more!
